Farm Values

Our southwest Minnesota farm includes corn, soybeans and alfalfa as well as a grain-finished beef cattle.  Our fourth generation farm takes a hands on approach, which continually explores new farming methods with a conscience approach to land improvement.  We strive to maintain open communication and a high level of integrity with all business partners, vendors and landowners.

Crops

Our crop rotation includes corn, soybeans and alfalfa. We utilize sustainable farming practices by practicing strip tillage on controlled traffic patterns, maintaining grass waterways for erosion protection and annual soil fertility sampling to reestablish and maintain optimum nutrient levels.  Keeping up with the latest technology options allows us to lower input costs while maximizing returns.  By using GPS based recommendations we apply seed and fertilizers based on each individual acre and soil type.  This enables us to "Optimize Every Acre."  Our nitrogen is split applied based on crop needs and changing weather patterns.  We've determined that in-crop application of nitrogen provides the optimal return on investment and best meets crop and soil needs.

Technology

The use of GPS technology has allowed us to utilize every acre to it's greatest potential. We are now able to pinpoint soil types and fertility levels to create yield zones based on 2.5 acre grid samples.  By accurately mapping fields based on these levels we are able to variable rate all of our inputs to the corresponding yield zones.  RTK guidance is used for planting and strip tillage, while sprayers and nutrient applicators have capabilities to read GPS prescriptions and create as applied data.  AgLeaders SMS Software is utilized to sort and store maps which help us and agronomists make better informed decisions based on hard data.  Although technology offers many advantages to our operation, we still choose a common sense approach to farming.

Soil Conservation

Our farms include variable slopes and soil types which are continually managed with strip tillage.  We utilize a variety options to prevent soil erosion and chemical or fertilizer runoff such as grass waterways, limited soil disruption and residue management.  Typical corn/bean rotations include a fall strip till pass that deposits fertilizer for the upcoming crop followed by planting on top of the tilled zone.  Controlled traffic patterns are utilized to minimize compaction.  Alfalfa was reintroduced into the operation in 2002.  By adding a third crop to our rotation on certain acres we have gained increased soil tilth and expanded valuable partnerships.

Land Improvement

It is widely known that tiling greatly benefits soil productivity by reducing excess moisture.  Soil moisture is the number one driver of optimal crops.  Without proper soil moisture, inputs are not fully utilized.  Drainage systems require constant maintenance and continual improvements.  In 2013 we invested in Trimble GPS Grade Control and FarmWorks surface software along with corresponding surveying equipment which has improved our tiling efficiency in the short fall days.  We are able to maintain surface waterways with the use of our own equipment as the needs arise.  Having this machinery allows us to make repairs and improvements without suffering crop damages due to scheduling.

Land Owners

At Klassen Land and Cattle we seek to provide personalized attention to landowners, open communication and the flexibility to meet individual landowner needs.  Our landowners play a vital role in our operation.  We are always available for ride-alongs and seek to maintain a year long relationship with our partners.  We hold the same commitment to caring for your land as we do our own, by improving soil quality through conservative tillage practices and nutrient management.  As a family farm, we always seek to leave a legacy for the next generation to expand upon.  By working with Klassen Land and Cattle you can expect personalized attention, honest communication and openness to new ideas and opportunities.  If you have questions contact Orvil, Andy or Jordan.
